On the beach: pictures from a roll of film
Exhibited in Paris, France, at Paris Anim’ Centre from 18/03/2019 - 06/04/2019

Between vernacular and fine art photography, On the beach: pictures from a roll of film is an attempt to be as straightforward as possible with the medium. Here, all of the 15 pictures exhibited come from the same roll of 35mm film, and the title implies the presence of subject and machine, it is a project about a period of time spent in the presence of a camera. Like a movie, each frame pushes the story forward, but the lack of a film camera pulling the roll of film at a constant speed, the photographer becomes the machine, choosing the variable time gap between the images, a negative space in which imagination can run free to construct a narrative. Through editing, the photographs become scenes, and choosing which ones to exhibit makes evident the process behind making an artwork.
With the constant stream of images of geopolitical conflicts being shown in the media, and sometimes in galleries, choosing to frame more personal moments, such as a holiday weekend with friends, becomes an individual political statement, when it seems all the market wants to see be photographed is conflict or greater themes. In On the beach, Lucas Pandolfo tries to represent one of the many small moments that sometimes go unnoticed in the bigger frame of things. Holding nothing back, this is as much about the people portrayed as it is about the camera that makes it possible, these photographs are the objects that today represent a period of time that once was, they are images and stories forever bound by the roll of film.
